REDUCE YOUR CHANCE OF CONTRACTING FOOD POISONING

Using extra caution and basic safety procedures can help you steer clear of a case of uncomfortable and sometimes deadly food poisoning.

There are numerous stories of food poisoning these days that occur in restaurants.   Scared consumers may take some peace from eating at home, but just as many cases can happen in this environment too.   It is especially prevalent during the summertime with the many BBQ's and family reunions that occur.

Here is a refresher course on food safety tips that can help you and your family avoid this problem.

  • Clean your hands, cooking surfaces, countertops, and utensils in hot, soapy water before and after preparing each food item. Rinse produce in running water.
  • Separate raw meat from cooked foods. Clean plates, utensils, and cutting boards that have touched raw meat.
  • Cook foods thoroughly. Use a (clean!) cooking thermometer to make sure meat and poultry is done.
  • Refrigerate meat or poultry as it defrosts; don't let it thaw on the countertop. Store foods promptly; don't let them linger on the table.

It should be easy to remember and follow these tips and enjoy your family reunion to the fullest.   (At least until Uncle Jimmy slurps down too many Budweiser's...)
